Hazaribagh is an area of Dhaka city, the capital of Bangladesh. It is known for its tannery industries and large leather processing zone. Up to 95% of the registered tanneries in Bangladesh are located in and around Hazaribagh. Most of their production is exported to Western or other Asian countries.
Between 8,000 and 15,000 people work in Hazaribagh, in extremely harsh conditions, for very low salaries, and are forced to live in highly polluted environments. Thousands of liters of highly toxic waste are dumped into the Buriganga River every day to produce clothing for export. A lot of children work in the factories.
